&tDisp=Steve Harrison treasures "beautiful things, simple things, but not too many of them". **
His work is the epitome of 'local'. A minimal carbon footprint practice extends to encompass all aspects of his life and engages the local community where he lives and works on a small acreage in the Southern Highlands of NSW. Harrison and his partner Janine King share a deep understanding of ecology and enjoy an enriched contemporary life whilst balancing their impact on the environment. Their approach is both pragmatic and inspired. Recognizing the impossibility of absolute sustainability, they are committed to a pragmatic philosophy of 'minimal consumption' and achieve this by making careful, appropriate and often ingenious choices about their way of life and associated use of resources.
Harrison's creative process reflects this commitment. The techniques employed are deliberately low energy and often time consuming, yet with careful planning a balanced efficacy is achieved. The fluency of expression in his work emerges from both expertise in the ceramic process and an intimate understanding of a rich geological neighbourhood. His designs reflect a timeless beauty and value of sustainment, embodied both symbolically and chemically in a unique indigenous materials palette.
