&cDisp=The Styx Valley Protest Shelter& &tDisp=Andrew Maynard Architects explores an architecture of enthusiasm. All designs are concept rich, sustainably conscious with the designers treating each project as a unique challenge offering unique possibilities. The Styx Valley Protest shelter is designed to supplement an existing shelter hung in the Styx Valley Forest, which is a pristine wilderness in southwestern Tasmania, Australia. It is home to the tallest hardwood trees in the world, many of which are over 400 years old. Unfortunately the Styx Valley falls just outside the protection zone and is now under attack from logging companies. The shelter is designed to attach itself to multiple trees, thereby directly securing three trees per structure from logging. Furthermore, the surrounding trees will pose a threat to the structure if felled. In this way a small number of structures can secure the well being of a large area of unspoiled wilderness.&
